EKON Spring 2008 – MVVM Talk

Yesterday I had my first talk at the EKON Spring. It was all about patterns, concentrated on MVC, MVP, MVVM and some underlying patterns like Observer, Strategy and Command.

Here you can download the slides and a C# WPF Codesample:

EKON Spring in Frankfurt

I’m going to hold two talks on the EKON 2008 Spring Edition in Frankfurt next week.

The first one will be about the MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) pattern, introduced with WPF, the second one will show the audience how to use the WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) from Delphi.

That’s the first time I’m going to talk to a real public audience – until now I only had more or less private trainings with up to 20 people. I just hope, my nerves are going to widthstand that new sort of stress ;-)

Some kilos lost on the way

I know, actually it won’t be of any interest for you, but I’m somewhat proud of it:
Since I started training (cardio and strength) two weeks before, I lost 3 kilos. And that’s with letting out two training sessions due to a conference I visited in Frankfurt last week. That didn’t allow me to go to the training center in Karlsruhe.

I will have the same problem next week (only training on Monday, but not on wednesday and friday), but I will compensate that by not eating that much on the conference and I will stay in Karlsruhe throughout the next Weekend and that will mean I can go to training on Friday evening and sunday.

About scratch lotteries and cameras – London

Blogging from Comfort Inn Kensignton, London.

First thing to mention was Ryanair. Actually I knew that drinks on board are extremely expensive, and that those cheap airlines tend to strange behaviour. But that they start to sell scratch lottery tickets on the flight was new to me.

Second thing worth to mention is that here in London you can’t walk a single meter without being tracked down by cameras all the way. It’s said it’s for security, but I really doubt that having a camera pointed at him will prevent a suicide bomber to kill himself and other people. It’s not comfortable knowing to be observed all the time. I actually hope that we don’t get this way of ‘big Brother’ in germany too.

More about London when I find the time…

Sunshine in this time…

Well, it’s quite dark out there. Out of the window i’d wanted to say. And.. well.. yes, it’s dark in my life too at the moment. But that’s nothing to really worry about.

The darker it gets for you, the more important get the persons out there. The people, that seem to care about you, that care about your feelings. And especially the people, that help you to cope with your problems. Even if it’s only by listening to you and playing some music.

I want to dedicate this post to someone special. Someone I don’t really know (yet), but a person, that is so amiable as one can be. She contacted me in a chat community I just wanted to have a short look at. She offered her help in the very first minute, and she’s so very warmhearted. She chatted with me, played some songs for me (her hobby is being a host on a web radio) and made me feel not so alone again.

I want to say thank you, Petra. Thank you for just being there, being you, spending some of your valuably time for talking to me. And thank you for your so lovely words accompanied by the knuddels rose. By now, just after a few days, you are allready a very special person to me and I want you to know that. You make the sun shine again. You’re a real friend and you are very special. Thank you so very much.

Worst Hotel ever

I just went to Karlsruhe to start my new contract job. Sine Karlsruhe is some kilometers away from home, I can’t drive the distance every day and I need a place to stay here.

Currently (meaning this week) I live in the Hotel am Karlstor – the worst hotel I ever stayed at. The room is extremely spartan, in the bathroom there is a big sign from the local electricity company warning not to touch the electric equipment because that could be harmful and having turned on the heater in the bathroom there is a noise you can’t sleep with. Okay, at least I have free wireless lan here, thats a bonus point against those 20 to 30 negative points this room makes up for.

Okay, there is a second bonus point: I have 5 minutes to go from here to the company I currently work for.

But after all this hotel is too expensive for the room. I’m going to find a better one for the next week and – ideally – a real room for the next three months. Whish me luck.

Ich hab heute zum dritten mal in den letzten zwei Wochen meine Signatur im Forum geändert. Warum? Weil ich immer wieder über bessere gestolpert bin. Hier nun meine Favorites, die ich irgendwo aus dem Netz hab.

See you @EKON spring 2008?

Yesterday, when coming home from the .NET Information Day II in Frankfurt, (Thanks to Jana Paetzold and Daniel Walzenbach for being there!) a Skype message reached me at my mobile.

Talking about Skype on a mobile: That software has a BIG, very BIG hunger on battery power – you can run the phone only a single day with active Skype. They definetly need to do something about that.

But back to topic: The other Daniel sent me gratulations and skyped me a link.

What’s this? Well, actually that means I’m going to hold a session about Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) with Delphi and one session about the MVVC Pattern at the EKON spring 2008 in february. My first time as a speaker :)

So, do I see you at EKON spring?

TFS – The long way to success??

First of all: I finally did it.
I managed to install a Team Foundation Server 2008. But it was a tricky thing to do – even when sticking literally to the documentation.

It was not a straightforward installation, since the TFS has some requirements you have to prepare manually. Especially when you’re trying to work in a ’2008 only’ environment. Beta operating systems and beta databases are sort of a moving target for infrastructure ;-)

So what are the things you really need?
1.) Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (Codename Longhorn) Beta
2.) Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (Codename Katmai) November CTP
3.) Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2008 (release version from this week ;-) )
4.) Some hours of spare time
5.) Strong nerves ;-)

You begin with installing the – guess – Windows Server. Thats the only really straightforward thing… Mehr >

New Hobby?

Actually, I did some photography with my new digital camera: A Nikon D40.

Here are the first pics that I like to share:
